Medication Decisions by AI? Know the Risks Before You Skip the Doctor

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into healthcare systems, offering tools that can suggest diagnoses, monitor symptoms, and even generate medication recommendations. According to a 2023 McKinsey report, AI-driven health apps have been downloaded by over 1.5 billion users globally, with medication-related queries among the most common. While this trend reflects society’s growing trust in technology, it also raises serious concerns — especially when individuals begin replacing doctors and pharmacists with AI tools for medical decisions.
As a pharmacy student, I’ve witnessed firsthand the rising number of people turning to AI chatbots, symptom checkers, and prescription apps to self-medicate. While these tools offer speed and convenience, the risks of relying on them without professional consultation are far too high. AI lacks access to complete patient history, cannot detect subtle physical signs, and doesn’t account for critical factors such as allergies, co-existing conditions, or lifestyle context. A 2022 study published in The Lancet Digital Health found that AI symptom checkers had a diagnostic accuracy rate of just 38%, compared to over 80% when diagnoses were made by trained clinicians. This significant gap could result in harmful misdiagnoses, incorrect drug choices, or missed warning signs for serious diseases.
Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the increasing misuse of antibiotics due to self-prescription via online platforms — a trend that contributes to global antimicrobial resistance, a threat predicted to cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if not addressed. Many people wrongly assume AI can make “safe” recommendations, but most AI-based tools are not approved by regulatory authorities like the FDA or DRAP (Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan). They often include disclaimers that their information is “not intended for medical use,” leaving patients with no legal accountability or follow-up care if things go wrong.
In pharmacy, we are taught that every patient is unique — and that safe prescribing requires careful evaluation of drug interactions, organ function, age, weight, mental health, and even socioeconomic status. AI, no matter how advanced, cannot replicate this holistic, judgment-based approach. People may also develop a false sense of confidence, believing that AI is “good enough,” which leads to delayed treatment and neglected follow-up, especially in lower-income or rural settings where digital tools may feel like an easy shortcut.
This blog is a call to action for the public to remain aware and cautious. While AI can certainly support healthcare professionals by improving efficiency and expanding access, it should never be seen as a replacement for licensed medical advice. We must reinforce trust in doctors, pharmacists, and nurses — not bypass them for convenience.
In the end, your health is too personal, too complex, and too precious to leave in the hands of a machine. Trust humans to heal — not just algorithms to guess.
